Eventually I just kept rolling and clubbing him with my club, and he transforms, and I roll and club again and he dies. I take out the ice thing and press on to the first boss and die a lot again. As there's this (clearly optional but I'm up to the challenge) ice enemy in the corner there.

Feeling pretty good about my choice since the enemies in the starting area are dropping like flies in 1 hit.
